We had dinner two nights in a row with the nicest families. Last night we met Ryan and his family for pizza. You know, moments before the tree fell on him and before they had a reason to wave, Ryan and Deb waved to one another on the golf course—I guess that sort of signaled the type of relationship that would eventually develop. Those two are an awful lot alike, and they really like one another now. It’s sweet to watch them together. I took this picture because I think Ryan has grown about 3 inches since we last joined them for dinner; he’s taller than I am now, and soon he’ll outgrow Deb.
Ryan’s taking lessons to learn how to play golf one armed, and in a couple of weeks he tries out for the school golf team. Now that’s tenacity. He still has very very little control over his left side, but that kid will not even listen to anyone who suggests he might have limitations. Recently he announced that he’s planning on running the length of his street; and he demonstrated his progress by running the length of a hallway for us. I mean, it is impressive.
Very shortly he begins Botox injections to freeze his good side so that his left side is forced into action and doesn’t atrophy. That, Reader, is tough love right there. You know, I was feeling a little blue yesterday…maybe I was tired…but hanging out with Ryan and his family last night made me feel really good. It didn’t hurt that on our way home on our scooters, Deb led us to Graeter’s where she ordered a sundae with two spoons.
[…] Dewey’s with the Korengel family last night. Always a delight. We had to meet early because Ryan was heading to baseball practice. If you only knew how amazing that is…he has no awareness […]
